Dear Mr. Persinger,

I’m writing to you to express concern for the welfare of reptiles and amphibians in your stores and PetSmart’s role in the wildlife trade which causes harm to animals, humans, and the environment.

While I appreciate all of the incredible work PetSmart has done on issues related to cats and dogs, you continue to ignore the growing problems related to the sale of wild animals like reptiles and amphibians. You are a prime example of how companies in Canada participate in the wildlife trade.

In PetSmart’s code of ethics and integrity, you claim to be a responsible and ethical company concerned about animal welfare, but the reptiles and amphibians you sell suffer at every step of the trade. Wild animals do not belong in captivity.

PetSmart should stop the sale of exotic animals for the same reason it was decided not to sell dogs and cats. Shelters are inundated with exotic animal inquiries and surrenders, these are the same shelters PetSmart Charities tries to help. There is also an increase of stray exotic pets found in our environment and the intensive breeding operations that produce these animals, are as concerning as puppy mills.

Reptiles and amphibians are sentient, living beings, who can experience pain and suffering just like our dogs and cats and deserve the same consideration. I urge you to end the sale of these animals in your stores.

I understand that World Animal Protection Canada has been reaching out to PetSmart for over two years, offering support, research and evidence about the destructive reptile and amphibian trade and how PetSmart can become part of the solution. Please work with World Animal Protection Canada and make a commitment to phase out the sale of these animals.
