Despite the overwhelming evidence showing animal farming to be a major source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and a top driver of climate change, politicians have barely scratched the surface in addressing this issue.

The consequences of not doing so will be dire. We are already seeing the impacts of a warming planet with raging wildfires and floods across the globe. Experts warn that without bold action to ensure citizens eat more plant-based and reduce meat and dairy consumption, we will not meet our climate goals as sent out in the Paris agreement.

The Government of Canada must take bolder action by setting emissions reduction goals for the animal agriculture sector and promote plant-based eating to Canadians. Research by Navius conducted last year shows the huge potential for reducing GHG emissions by eating fewer animal-sourced foods.

COP28 – the UN’s annual climate change conference is taking place November 30 – December 12 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). It has been dubbed the “Food COP” as the UAE Presidency is calling upon governments to sign a Leaders Declaration on Food Systems, Agriculture and Climate Action and has committed to plant-based catering at the conference.
