Pass the Jane Goodall Act ASAP! Across Canada, hundreds of thousands of wild animals are held captive and used as entertainers and as pets. The Jane Goodall Act is ground-breaking legislation that would put an end to the commercial trade of 800+ wild animal species and prohibit their use for entertainment. With the support of animal advocates like you, we helped develop and promote this legislation. In March 2022, Senator Marty Klyne re-introduced the Jane Goodall Act (Bill S-241) and we’re so close to gaining the support we need to move it forward. Parliament has a full agenda when they reconvene in September, and we need your voice to ensure the Jane Goodall Act passes. As we continue to gain support with Senators and Members of Parliament (MPs), we need your voice to show these key Ministers that Canadians want to see the Jane Goodall Act become law. Use our advocacy system to send an email to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, copying the Minister of Justice and Attorney General and the Prime Minister. Let them know that Canadians overwhelmingly support this legislation and urge them to pass the Jane Goodall Act ASAP! To: Steven Guilbeault Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Federal Government of Canada Dear Minister Guilbeault, I am writing to convey my strong support for the Jane Goodall Act (Bill S-241), introduced by Senator Marty Klyne, and I urge you to support this important and groundbreaking legislation for wildlife protection. Bill S-241 is supported by leading animal welfare experts such as Dr. Jane Goodall and a coalition of Canada’s leading zoos and animal welfare organizations. Senator Klyne and the Honourable Murray Sinclair, sponsor of a previous version of this legislation, say the bill will advance reconciliation with the natural world, a goal of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The bill is based in science and Indigenous values. The Jane Goodall Act will protect over 800 wild species, including big cats, bears, wolves, elephants, great apes and certain monkeys, walruses, and reptiles by ending the use of these animals for entertainment and display at roadside zoos. The bill will also help Canada fulfil its commitment to introduce legislation to protect animals in captivity, curb illegal wildlife trafficking, and end the trade in elephant ivory and rhino horns. It's clear that Canadians want this legislation. The Jane Goodall Act would also fulfill commitments made by other parties in their election platforms. The Official Opposition committed to end the importation of and trade in wild animals and their products that carry elevated zoonotic disease risk and the New Democratic Party committed to curb the import and domestic trade of wild animals. The Federal Government can proactively support the legislation in many ways, and Members of Parliament and Senators can support the bill and cooperate to expedite passage. Canadians will appreciate it. I was so proud when Canada passed Bill S-203 to end the keeping and breeding of whales, dolphins, and porpoises in captivity. The Jane Goodall Act builds on this legacy and would make Canada a global leader in protecting the welfare of wild animals. There is strong scientific and public support for this law which would also help curb species extinction and biodiversity loss.
